On 2nd January, 1915, the 1st King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalion of 6 Brigade, 2nd Division moved into the front line near Richebourg-l’Avoue where they remained until relieved on 15th January. George Penman was killed in on 11th January and may well have been the rifleman, recorded in the battalion diary, who was killed when a heavy shell fell into and exploded in a trench held by thr battalion.
